Eight Russian Officers Die in Tu-95 Bomber Crash
The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation confirmed a Tu-95 strategic bomber crashed during a training flight in the Amur region, killing eight officers.
A Russian Tu-95MS strategic bomber crashed during a training flight in the Amur region on September 29, 2026. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation initially reported that six crew members died and one was injured after the aircraft made an emergency landing near the village of Krasnoyarovo. Later reports from the outlet Mediazona increased the death toll to eight, noting that the casualties included six crew members and two passengers or inspectors.
The aircraft took off from the Ukrainka airbase and was not carrying ammunition at the time of the accident. While the Ministry of Defense stated the crew attempted to steer the plane away from residential buildings, the cause of the crash remains undetermined. Unconfirmed reports from Telegram channels suggested possibilities ranging from a fuel explosion to simultaneous engine failure and sabotage.
Three of the deceased officers—Lt. Col. Fyodor Pavlyukov, Maj. Andrei Lobanov, and Maj. Andrei Gerasimov—were identified by Ukraine as participants in missile strikes against Ukrainian territory. The loss of the aircraft is considered significant as Russia no longer produces the Tu-95, which serves as a primary component of its air-based nuclear attack capability.
