Rhine River Water Levels Hit Record Lows Disrupting Industry
Record low water levels in the Rhine River have spiked shipping costs and forced major chemical producers to reduce industrial output.
Water levels in the Rhine River dropped to record lows over the weekend of September 26-27, 2026, falling below the critical shipping threshold at the Kaub chokepoint. The water level dipped to 3 centimeters below the benchmark, threatening the transport of fuel, coal, and industrial commodities across central Europe. While levels recovered slightly to 2 centimeters on Monday, forecasts indicate they may fall below the threshold again on Tuesday.
BASF SE and other major industrial players, including Bayer, Covestro AG, and Shell plc, have been forced to reduce output or declare force majeure due to the disruptions. The drought follows Western Europe's hottest summer on record.
Shipping costs for diesel from Rotterdam to Karlsruhe rose 15% on Monday, following a doubling of costs earlier in the month. The German Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration and the German Federal Institute of Hydrology provided the data and forecasts tracking the river's decline.
