Nick Begich Leads Alaska House Primary Election
Republican Representative Nick Begich led the Alaska U.S. House primary, with independent Bill Hill securing a spot on the November general election ballot.
Republican Representative Nick Begich III led the U.S. House primary election in Alaska on Tuesday, securing approximately 46% of the vote according to preliminary results. Begich enters the general election with a significant financial advantage, having raised between $3.2 million and $5.4 million and carrying the endorsement of Donald Trump.
Independent candidate Bill Hill, a Bristol Bay fisherman and retired school administrator, advanced to the November ballot with roughly 31% of the early vote. The race is expected to evolve into a two-way contest after Democratic candidate Matt Schultz finished third with 8% of the vote. Schultz had suspended his campaign in mid-July due to a lack of institutional support and fundraising struggles, subsequently endorsing Hill.
Federal prison inmate Eric Hafner placed fourth with nearly 4% of the vote and may take one of the remaining two ballot slots under Alaska's open primary system, which allows the top four candidates to advance regardless of party. Hill's candidacy relies on Alaska's history of electing independent officials to challenge established party incumbents.
