Nigel Farage Faces Resumed Probe Over Unreported Gifts

Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards Daniel Greenberg has resumed an investigation into Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform UK and MP for Clacton, concerning the failure to declare financial gifts and donations. The inquiry was previously suspended on July 8 after Farage resigned his seat to trigger a by-election. While Farage claimed the resignation allowed voters to decide his fitness for office, reports indicate his team believed the move would end the probe.

The investigation focuses on two primary financial arrangements: a £5 million gift from Thailand-based businessman Christopher Harborne and support from George Cottrell, who provided Farage with a London residence and funded social media filming in 2024. Farage argues he was not active in politics when he received the Harborne gift.

Farage has characterized the investigation as a "political tool," while Reform UK MP Sarah Pochin described the proceedings as a "kangaroo court." If the commissioner finds Farage in breach of rules and he is subsequently suspended for 10 or more sitting days, he could face a recall petition.
