IMF Report Finds AI Reshaping Global Labor Demand
The International Monetary Fund reports that AI has reduced hiring in exposed occupations while creating new demand for emerging technical skills.
The International Monetary Fund released a working paper and a Regional Economic Outlook report analyzing the impact of artificial intelligence on global labor markets. The research, based on 700 million job advertisements across 110 economies from November 2021 to April 2026, found that hiring in occupations highly exposed to AI declined by nearly 10% relative to less exposed roles following the launch of ChatGPT.
This decline later stabilized, indicating that companies are redesigning production processes to incorporate AI rather than simply reducing recruitment. While AI compressed hiring in some sectors, it generated new demand for 51 emerging skills, including AI agents and prompt engineering. This shift is most pronounced in India, specifically within Global Capability Centers and IT services.
The negative hiring effects were strongest in advanced economies, while the impact remained statistically insignificant in Africa and low-income economies. The findings suggest that AI is reshaping the nature of knowledge-based work rather than eliminating it entirely.
