GitLab Cuts Jobs and Restructures for AI Agent Pivot
GitLab announced a strategic restructuring and job cuts to shift resources toward AI agents and automate internal workflows.
The software company GitLab Inc. announced a strategic restructuring and job cuts on May 12, 2026, to pivot resources toward the "agentic era" of artificial intelligence. This shift involves integrating AI agents into internal workflows to automate approvals and reviews, as well as reorganizing research and development into approximately 60 autonomous teams.
CEO Bill Staples stated the move is not a cost-cutting exercise but an investment to capitalize on AI-driven opportunities. To achieve this, the company is flattening its management layers and reducing its country footprint by roughly 30%.
Following the announcement, GitLab shares dropped more than 8% in after-hours trading. The company has not disclosed the total number of affected roles, noting that these details and the resulting financial impact will be provided during the quarterly earnings report on June 2, 2026.
