Netflix Stock Hits 52-Week Low Amid Strategic Shifts

Netflix shares have fallen nearly 40% over the past year as the company navigates workforce cuts, leadership changes, and intensifying competition from YouTube.

Shares of Netflix have declined 39.66% over the past year and 22.56% year-to-date, recently trading at $72.61 near a 52-week low. The slump follows a period of strategic uncertainty, including the company's decision to abandon a potential deal for Warner Bros. Discovery and concerns over viewer engagement as YouTube captured a record 14.2% share of U.S. TV time.

To stabilize operations, the company is cutting 6% of its workforce and has appointed Peter Rice as Chief Content Officer, replacing Bela Bajaria. Netflix is also diversifying its content portfolio, having secured broadcast rights for the 2030 World Cup in Spain and Andorra. Financially, the company continues to report double-digit revenue growth, with a 13.4% increase last quarter and a 70% rise in its advertiser base to over 4,000 clients. The company has also aggressively repurchased $4.7 billion in shares last quarter.

Wall Street analysts remain divided on the company's valuation. BMO Capital lowered its price target to $125, citing investor pessimism regarding slowing growth in the United States and Canada. KeyBanc Capital Markets Inc. set a lower target of $85 due to foreign exchange headwinds, while Goldman Sachs Private Wealth Management lowered its target to $90. Conversely, BofA Securities and Pivotal Research maintain a target of $135, arguing that the company has won the global streaming wars.
