Van Hollen Leads Senate Push for West Bank Human Rights Report

Senator Chris Van Hollen and 10 Democratic colleagues introduced a privileged resolution in the U.S. Senate to compel the Trump administration to account for Israel's human rights practices in the West Bank. Invoking the Foreign Assistance Act, the measure requires an unclassified report within 30 days regarding the killings of at least nine U.S. citizens since January 2022, including journalist Shireen Abu Akleh and Aysenur Ezgi Eygi.

The resolution also demands information on the treatment of Palestinian children under Israeli military law. This legislative push follows reports of escalating settler violence, including a recent attack on the home of American citizen Louai Abu Ridi. U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee condemned the incident as thuggish, while Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter described such extremist violence as a stain on Israel.

Because the resolution is privileged, Democrats can force a vote despite expected opposition from Republican leaders. The move highlights deepening divisions within the U.S. government over policy toward Israel and the accountability of the Israeli government regarding human rights violations in the West Bank.
