Elon Musk Pivots Tesla Toward AI and Optimus Robots
Elon Musk is shifting Tesla's focus toward artificial intelligence, humanoid robots, and Robotaxis as the company loses its global electric vehicle leadership to BYD.
Elon Musk is pivoting Tesla's business model toward real-world artificial intelligence, focusing on the Optimus humanoid robot and unsupervised Full Self-Driving software. During a third-quarter earnings call, Musk announced plans to release Optimus V3 in the first quarter of 2026, claiming the robot will appear so lifelike that users may need to poke it to believe it is a machine. He projected that these robots could eventually generate $10 trillion in revenue, potentially driving over 80% of the company's valuation.
Parallel to the robotics push, Tesla is rolling out a pilot program for Robotaxi, an autonomous ride-sharing service. Musk asserts that all Tesla vehicles will eventually support unsupervised autonomous driving through over-the-air software updates.
This strategic shift comes amid significant financial headwinds and increased competition. Tesla lost its position as the global electric vehicle leader to Chinese automaker BYD in 2025, with annual deliveries falling from 1.789 million in 2024 to 1.636 million. The company's financial performance has declined, with net income dropping 37% year-over-year in the most recent quarter to $1.62 billion and operating margins falling to 5.8%. As of January 21, 2026, Tesla shares have decreased approximately 6% year-to-date.
