Iran Shoots Down Five US Reconnaissance Drones

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Aerospace Force destroyed five United States reconnaissance drones in Iranian airspace over several days. On Thursday at 10:12 a.m. local time, the IRGC intercepted an MQ-9 drone over Qeshm Island, marking the 53rd MQ-9 downed by Iranian forces since the start of the conflict. This followed the destruction of four MQ-1 drones east and west of the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian officials stated the interceptions were carried out using a new advanced air-defense system. Acting Defense Minister Majid Ebn-e-Reza claimed the conflict has exposed challenges in US military systems, specifically citing the Patriot and THAAD systems and Tomahawk missiles.

The losses have impacted US military readiness. The United States Air Force operational MQ-9 fleet has fallen to approximately 135 aircraft, dropping below the minimum threshold of 189. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems has confirmed that production of the Reaper drone has ceased.
