Authorities Demolish Abhishek Banerjee's Party Office in West Bengal
The South 24 Parganas district administration demolished an illegal five-story party office belonging to Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee in Amtala on July 18.
The district administration of South 24 Parganas demolished a five-story party office belonging to Abhishek Banerjee, a Member of Parliament and general secretary of the Trinamool Congress, in Amtala on Saturday, July 18, 2026. Authorities stated the building lacked a proper sanction plan and was an illegal construction. The demolition proceeded via bulldozers after Banerjee's representatives failed to attend a scheduled hearing on July 15, following notices issued on June 30 and July 7.
Security for the operation was provided by a joint team of Bengal Police and Central Armed Police Forces. The Bharatiya Janata Party supported the action, with legislator Agniswar Naskar alleging the land had been forcefully grabbed. BJP State General Secretary Locket Chatterjee characterized the move as part of a broader effort to remove illegal structures and combat corruption.
In response, Abhishek Banerjee described the situation as political intimidation. He alleged that the West Bengal Police, specifically the Special Task Force and Criminal Investigation Department, have harassed and intimidated approximately 25 of his associates, claiming that phones were tapped and family members were threatened to elicit false statements.
