Democrats Flip Key Missouri Seats in Tuesday Elections
Democrats Fred Wellman and Betsy Fogle won key seats in Missouri, while most Republican incumbents retained their positions in congressional and state house races.
Tuesday elections in Missouri resulted in significant Democratic gains in key districts, though Republicans maintained a strong overall presence. Fred Wellman defeated seven-term Republican incumbent Ann Wagner to win Missouri's 2nd Congressional District with 51% of the vote, marking the first time a Democrat has held the seat since 1990. Wellman's victory followed a Supreme Court of the United States ruling that blocked gerrymandered 2025 maps that would have favored Wagner.
In the state legislature, Democrat Betsy Fogle flipped Missouri Senate District 30, defeating Republican Melanie Stinnett. The seat had been held by Republicans since 2002. Fogle campaigned on public school funding and cost-of-living issues, while Stinnett focused on fiscal restraint and education reform.
Other congressional results saw Republican incumbents Bob Onder and Jason Smith win reelection in the 3rd and 8th Districts, respectively. Republican Chris Stigall won the open 6th District seat to succeed Sam Graves. Democrat Wesley Bell won reelection in the 1st District with 81% of the vote.
At the state house level, Republican John Martin retained his House District 44 seat, defeating Democrat Bekki Brewer. Missouri voters also decided on several ballot measures, rejecting Amendment 3 and Proposition A, while approving Amendment 6, which protects laws passed through citizen-led ballot initiatives.
