UK Energy Bills Projected to Rise Over 25 Percent

Martin Lewis and EDF Energy warn UK households of substantial energy price cap increases in January 2027 amid rising inflation and Middle East tensions.

Energy costs and inflation are projected to surge in the United Kingdom at the start of 2027. Martin Lewis, founder of Money Saving Expert, warned that the Ofgem price cap is likely to rise by 28.8%, which would increase the annual bill for typical households from £1,723 to £2,219. Lewis attributed the spike to high wholesale rates and noted that while the final increase could range between 12% and 30%, a substantial rise is almost certain unless wholesale prices drop catastrophically.

EDF Energy provided a similar estimate, projecting that typical household bills will rise by nearly £470 to approximately £2,200 a year, driven by an expected price cap increase of over 25%. These energy costs are contributing to broader economic instability. A Financial Times survey of 12 economists predicts British inflation will peak at an average of 4.4% around the start of 2027, surpassing the Office for Budget Responsibility's previous projection of 3.8%.

The Office for Budget Responsibility attributed the discrepancy in inflation forecasts to rising oil and gas prices following a re-escalation of war in the Middle East. In response to these economic pressures, the Bank of England is expected to implement a quarter-point interest rate increase.
