Ontario Schedules Extensive Highway Closures Amid Extreme Heat
The Ministry of Transportation scheduled dozens of highway closures across Peel and Halton regions as Environment Canada warned of extreme heat across Ontario.
The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario has scheduled extensive roadwork and highway closures across Ontario's Peel and Halton regions. In Peel, 28 closures are planned affecting Highways 410, 401, 403, 10, 9, and the Queen Elizabeth Way. In Halton, nine closures are scheduled, primarily impacting Eastport Drive, Highway 403, and the Queen Elizabeth Way.
Specific overnight lane closures are scheduled for the Niagara-bound Queen Elizabeth Way over the Burlington Skyway bridge on July 13 and July 14, 2026. Three of the four right lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. as part of a bridge rehabilitation project slated for completion by the end of the year. These nightly closures remain weather-dependent.
Concurrent with these infrastructure projects, Environment and Climate Change Canada issued warnings for an extreme heat event starting July 13. Maximum temperatures are expected to reach between 30 and 37 degrees Celsius across eastern Ontario, southwestern Ontario, and the Greater Golden Horseshoe, with the peak occurring Tuesday.
