Federal Reserve Reports AI Impacting Jobs in Five Districts

The Federal Reserve reports that artificial intelligence is reducing staffing levels and delaying hiring across five of its twelve districts.

The Federal Reserve reported in its October 14, 2026, Beige Book that artificial intelligence is beginning to impact employment in five of its twelve districts. Firms in these regions are reducing staffing levels through attrition, delaying new hiring, or planning for fewer job openings as AI investments increase productivity.

While the central bank noted that "Most Districts described little or no net change in overall employment levels," the report serves as an early warning of trends that may not yet be visible in official payroll data. The findings suggest that while AI suppliers are seeing revenue growth, general businesses are increasingly utilizing the technology as a cost-cutting measure to protect profit margins.

Broader economic growth remains weak, with only two districts reporting moderate activity. The Federal Reserve faces complicated interest rate decisions due to 3.7% annual inflation and rising oil prices. Following the report, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF closed down 1.08%.
