Apple Splits iPhone 18 Launch and Plans AI Hardware

Continuing its shift toward AI-integrated hardware, Apple Inc. is reportedly splitting its iPhone 18 release cycle into two distinct windows. The company plans to unveil premium devices—the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a first-generation foldable iPhone—in September 2026, with a keynote tentatively set for September 9. These high-end models are expected to feature 2-nanometer A20 chips and variable-aperture cameras.

The standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and a second-generation iPhone Air (codenamed V62) are slated for a delayed launch in early 2027 to better manage production resources and revenue. This transition coincides with a leadership change, as John Ternus is set to succeed Tim Cook as CEO on September 1.

Under this new leadership, Apple is planning a massive 2027 product wave to mark the iPhone's 20th anniversary. This roadmap includes anniversary models (codenamed V73 and V74) featuring all-glass bodies and curved displays, a second-generation foldable iPhone, and AI-focused AirPods equipped with computer-vision cameras to provide Siri with visual environmental context.

Financial pressures are already impacting the lineup, as Tim Cook warned that price increases are unavoidable due to rising memory chip costs. The iPhone 18 Pro may see a $200 price hike to $1,299. To support these ambitions, Apple is partnering with TSMC for 2nm processors and Samsung Display for exclusive foldable and curved OLED panels.
