U.S. Midterm Election Results Face Potential Tabulation Delays

Election officials warn that varying state laws and close Senate races may delay the finalization of 2026 U.S. midterm results for days or weeks.

The final results of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections may take several days or weeks to certify due to a combination of close margins in competitive Senate races and diverse state tabulation laws. Key contests in Michigan, Maine, Iowa, Alaska, Kansas, and Texas are expected to drive the timeline. In Detroit, elections chief Daniel A. Baxter expects 95% of ballots to be reported on election night but warned that late absentee submissions could delay the final count.

State-specific processes further complicate the schedule. California requires most results by the 13th day after the election, while Alaska accepts certain overseas ballots for 15 days. Both Maine and Alaska utilize ranked choice voting, a system that can extend the certification window. Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows emphasized the need for accuracy over speed in the tabulation process.

Legal challenges have also emerged. On October 22, the United States Department of Justice filed a lawsuit to block the certification of the Alaska Senate race if incumbent Senator Dan S. Sullivan loses, citing potential voter confusion. This legal action, combined with the complexities of ranked choice voting, creates significant uncertainty regarding the timing of the final outcome in Alaska.
