Australian National Debt Surpasses $1 Trillion Milestone

Australia's national gross debt hit $1 trillion for the first time on August 20, 2026, amid forecasts that combined government debt will reach $2 trillion by 2030.

Australia's national gross debt surpassed $1 trillion for the first time on August 20, 2026, following the issuance of new bonds. The total peaked at approximately $1.008 trillion before dipping to $994.8 billion on August 21 as $6 billion in notes matured. This milestone occurred as the United States national debt simultaneously exceeded $40 trillion.

Jim Chalmers, the Treasurer of Australia, defended the government's fiscal record, asserting that debt is $200 billion lower than the trajectory inherited from the previous Coalition government. In contrast, Liberal Shadow Minister Tim Wilson criticized the administration for using windfall revenues to increase spending rather than paying down debt, arguing that the annual interest bill erodes real wages.

Analysis from the Parliamentary Budget Office indicates a bipartisan trend of increasing debt, with combined federal and state public sector debt forecast to reach $2 trillion by 2030. Federal debt is expected to rise to $1.2 trillion, while state and territory debt is projected to reach $770.9 billion. Tasmania is forecast to see the most extreme increase, with its interest bill projected to explode by 6,280% from 2018-19 levels.

Separately, Treasurer Chalmers defended a Western Australia GST deal despite a Productivity Commission interim report stating the arrangement could cost federal taxpayers nearly $60 billion.
