Alphabet Raises AI Infrastructure Spending to $205 Billion
Alphabet Inc. increased its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $205 billion to expand AI data centers amid surging Google Cloud demand and record enterprise adoption.
Alphabet Inc. increased its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to between $195 billion and $205 billion, up from an initial projection of $180 billion to $190 billion. The spending surge focuses on servers, data centers, and networking equipment to support the expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure. Management indicated that expenditures will increase significantly again in 2027 to meet massive unmet demand.
This investment follows a period of rapid growth for Google Cloud, which saw second-quarter revenue surge 82% year-over-year to $24.8 billion. The cloud division maintains a record backlog of $514 billion, with approximately 90% of Fortune 100 companies now utilizing Gemini Enterprise. To fund these initiatives, Alphabet raised $84.75 billion in equity and assumed more than $114 billion in debt since early 2025. The aggressive spending led to the company reporting negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion for the first time since its public offering.
CEO Sundar Pichai defended the outlay as necessary to secure leadership in AI and cloud computing, noting that AI Overviews now reach over 2.5 billion monthly users. The company relies on a network of partners for this expansion, including Broadcom Inc. for tensor processing units (TPUs) and TSMC for manufacturing. Despite the financial pressure, Alphabet maintains a substantial cash reserve of over $242 billion and continues to see material returns from its integrated AI portfolio.
