European Stocks Decline Amid French Riots and Curfews

European stock indices fell on October 20 as anti-government protests in France escalated into riots, prompting authorities to implement curfews in several major cities.

European stocks declined on October 20, with the pan-European Stoxx 600 index falling 0.27 per cent and France's CAC 40 index dropping 0.2 per cent. The market slide follows a weekend of nationwide anti-government protests in France that escalated into riots and looting.

The French Republic responded to the unrest by implementing curfews in Paris, Lille, and Nice. This political instability increases pressure on the French economy, which is already struggling with high government debt and soft growth.

Corporate earnings provided mixed results during the volatility. French cloud operator OVHcloud saw its shares rise 8.5 per cent after reporting its first positive levered free cash flow since 2021. Conversely, visualization technology company Barco experienced a 12.9 per cent share drop after forecasting a slight decline in full-year sales.
