BP CEO Meg O’Neill Pivots Away from Supermajor Status
BP CEO Meg O’Neill announced a strategic shift to stop characterizing the company as a supermajor and focus investments on its strongest businesses.
Meg O’Neill, the Chief Executive Officer of BP Plc, announced a strategic shift during an earnings conference call on August 4, 2026, to stop characterizing the company as a "Big Oil supermajor." O’Neill stated that BP must focus on competing within its own "weight class" and concentrate investment in its strongest businesses rather than maintaining a sprawling global footprint.
This pivot aims to reverse years of under-performance and distance the company from the industry consolidation trend BP helped initiate in the late 1990s. To implement this strategy, O’Neill has accelerated the sale of various assets, including the company's UK North Sea business and the U.S. biogas producer Archaea Energy.
