Waymo, Tesla, and Baidu Expand Global Ride-Hailing Footprints in 2025

Autonomous vehicle services moved toward mainstream adoption in 2025, with Waymo LLC dominating the United States market. The Alphabet-owned company operated in five key cities, including San Francisco and Los Angeles, and announced plans to enter London and 11 additional US cities by 2026. Despite this growth, Waymo LLC issued a software recall after vehicles illegally passed school buses in Texas.

Other major players launched targeted services during the year. Amazon's Zoox LLC introduced public rides in Las Vegas and San Francisco, offering services for free while awaiting commercial regulatory approval. Tesla Inc. deployed a pilot robotaxi service in Austin and San Francisco using human safety drivers, while simultaneously testing completely driverless vehicles in Austin.

Internationally, Baidu Inc.'s Apollo Go maintained its lead in China and expanded into Europe, Switzerland, and the UAE. Similarly, WeRide partnered with Uber to launch services in Riyadh and Abu Dhabi. Despite the industry's expansion, public trust remains low, with a 2025 AAA survey showing 66% of US drivers feel fearful of autonomous vehicles.
