Applied Digital Files Permit for Alabama Data Center

Applied Digital Corporation filed a permit with the Alabama Department of Environmental Management for a proposed two-million-square-foot data center in Brookwood, Alabama. The project, filed under APLD BHM-01 LLC, would occupy 137 acres of land the company already owns. Construction is expected to begin shortly and finish by late 2028.

Brookwood Mayor Joe Barger praised the potential for 2,000 construction jobs and over 100 permanent high-paying positions, though he avoided confirming the specific project. Nick Phillips, Executive Vice President of External Affairs at Applied Digital, stated that no final decision has been made on whether to proceed at this specific location.

The proposal has faced criticism from local residents and environmentalist John Wathen. Opponents cite a lack of transparency and express concerns regarding runoff into Hurricane Creek and the facility's proximity to Brookwood Middle School.
