Samsung Plans Up to Six Foldable Devices for 2027
Samsung Electronics plans to expand its 2027 foldable lineup to include tri-fold and wide-format models following the commercial success of the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Following record-breaking success and strong pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Samsung Electronics plans to significantly expand its foldable smartphone portfolio in 2027. The company has already increased production of the Z Fold 8 by 1 million units to meet initial demand for its shorter, wider book format.
The upcoming 2027 lineup is expected to include between five and six devices. This roadmap features the Galaxy Z Fold 9, a Galaxy Z Fold 9 Ultra, and a Galaxy Z Flip 9, alongside a new tri-fold device. Samsung is also developing two wide-format foldables, one of which is specifically designed to reduce letterboxing for cinematic video content and YouTube by optimizing the screen aspect ratio beyond the 4:3 ratio used in the Z Fold 8.
This aggressive expansion is viewed as a strategic response to reports that Apple is developing a foldable iPhone Ultra with a similar 4:3 aspect ratio. While the move allows Samsung to target various price segments and content creators, analysts warn that a complex lineup could confuse consumers and lead to internal sales cannibalization. Additionally, reports indicate that the budget-friendly Z Flip FE has been cancelled.
