Malaysian Ringgit Fluctuates Ahead of Central Bank Meetings
The Malaysian ringgit showed resilience against the US dollar and major currencies as investors await policy decisions from the US Federal Reserve and Bank Negara Malaysia.
The Malaysian ringgit experienced volatility against the US dollar and major global currencies between October 26 and October 27, 2026. On Monday, the currency closed lower at 4.0855/0895, though it strengthened against most ASEAN currencies and the British pound. Market caution prevailed as investors anticipated the US Federal Reserve's policy meeting, with analysts noting that President Donald Trump's hawkish stance toward Iran created upside risks for crude oil prices and inflation.
By Tuesday morning, the ringgit opened higher, rising to 4.0840/4.0905 against the US dollar. It gained ground against the euro, Japanese yen, and Singapore dollar, although it eased against the Thai baht. Analysts attributed this resilience to Malaysia's strong economic fundamentals, which helped offset external geopolitical risks.
Market attention has shifted toward a two-day meeting of the US Federal Open Market Committee and diplomatic talks in Iran involving officials from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkiye. Investors are now looking forward to the Bank Negara Malaysia Monetary Policy Committee meeting on November 5 to determine if the overnight policy rate will be normalized.
