Karnataka Congress MLA Warns Against Cauvery Water Release

Dr. Ranganath warns that releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu may jeopardize Karnataka's own water security despite a tribunal order.

Karnataka Congress MLA Dr. Ranganath stated that the state government faces a difficult situation regarding the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. The challenge follows a tribunal direction requiring Karnataka to release approximately 12,000 cusecs of water for an additional 15 days.

Ranganath expressed concern that the Cauvery, Kabini, and Hemavathi reservoirs are not filled to capacity, which could jeopardize water availability for Karnataka's farmers and citizens. He argued that Tamil Nadu is better positioned to manage its needs due to superior groundwater availability and expected monsoon rainfall that Karnataka lacks.

While acknowledging the tribunal's verdict, Ranganath noted that Chief Minister DK Shivkumar will make the final decision based on current reservoir levels. He urged against protests and bandhs, calling instead for the exploration of legally viable alternatives to resolve the dispute.
