SpaceX Acquires AI Coding Startup Cursor for $60 Billion

SpaceX is acquiring Anysphere, the developer of Cursor AI, in an all-stock deal to accelerate its enterprise AI capabilities and integrate tools with xAI.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SpaceX) entered a definitive agreement on June 16, 2026, to acquire Anysphere, the parent company of the AI coding agent Cursor, in an all-stock transaction valued at $60 billion. The deal, expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, follows SpaceX's record-breaking Nasdaq IPO on June 12. By utilizing Class A shares, SpaceX is leveraging its surge in market valuation—which peaked near $2.97 trillion—to minimize equity dilution for shareholders.

SpaceX intends to integrate Cursor into its AI division, which includes the previously merged xAI and the Grok chatbot. This strategic move aims to close the leadership gap with rivals OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google by gaining access to Cursor's extensive developer ecosystem, which includes 64% of Fortune 500 companies. Cursor will leverage xAI's Colossus supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, to scale its proprietary models and develop a joint coding agent known as Grok Build.

Founded in 2022 by MIT dropouts Michael Truell, Aman Sanger, Sualeh Asif, and Arvid Lunnemark, Cursor grew rapidly to generate billions in annualized recurring revenue. The acquisition is projected to make the co-founders multibillionaires. Concurrent with the deal, SpaceX continues its AI infrastructure push, including a planned $55 billion chip-fabrication facility in Texas. The company's massive valuation surge has also reportedly made Elon Musk the first trillionaire.
