Walmart and Worldpay Adopt OpenAI Agentic Commerce Protocol

OpenAI partners with Walmart and Worldpay to launch agentic commerce, allowing AI agents to independently predict consumer needs and execute retail transactions.

The retail sector is transitioning toward agentic commerce, a system where AI agents predict consumer needs and independently execute transactions. OpenAI has partnered with Walmart to develop these capabilities to attract millennial shoppers and compete with Amazon. The expansion of this technology includes the launch of the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open standard designed to facilitate collaboration between AI agents, businesses, and consumers.

To support this infrastructure, Worldpay announced on November 5, 2025, that it has integrated the ACP. This allows ChatGPT users in the United States to shop directly from participating Worldpay merchants via Instant Checkout. In Australia, Coles Supermarkets has also partnered with OpenAI to deploy ChatGPT enterprise using the GPT-5 model for administrative research and data insights.

Despite the technical rollout, consumer trust remains limited. A Worldpay survey found that while 44% of Americans would let an AI assistant browse for the best prices, only 6% are willing to grant an AI full automatic buying control. Users are most comfortable using the technology for everyday purchases under $50, such as subscriptions and meal deliveries. McKinsey & Company projects that this shift could generate up to $1 trillion in revenue in the United States and between $3 trillion and $5 trillion globally by 2030.
