Accell Group Files for Insolvency After Failing to Find Buyer
Accell Group has initiated insolvency proceedings in the Netherlands after failing to secure a buyer or stabilize its finances despite multiple restructuring attempts.
The Accell Group, the Netherlands-based owner of bicycle brands such as Raleigh, Lapierre, and Ghost, has initiated insolvency proceedings and sought court protection after running out of cash to pay its debts. The company was granted a suspension of payments to negotiate with creditors and avoid total liquidation. This move follows the filing of a notice of intention to appoint administrators for Accell UK and Ireland.
The financial collapse follows a period of instability marked by a £30 million loss in 2023 and significant redundancies in 2024. The group's distress was exacerbated by a post-pandemic inventory surplus, industry pressure from Chinese rivals, and a costly recall of Babboe cargo bikes. These issues persisted despite a 2022 acquisition by KKR & Co. Inc. for approximately €1.4 billion to €1.6 billion. Although KKR provided roughly €330 million in loans and cash, it handed the business over to creditors in February 2026.
Accell attempted two debt restructurings in February 2025 and February 2026, but remained unable to meet its obligations. Takeover talks with Singapore-based Dutech Holdings via its subsidiary Tri Star Group also failed. The fate of the Raleigh brand, which maintains offices in Nottinghamshire, now rests with court-appointed administrators. Chief Executive Jonas Nilsson stated the company had explored every realistic option to continue in its current form.
