Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. Agrees to Acquire AI Startup Taalas

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. entered into an agreement Thursday to acquire Taalas, a Toronto-based startup specializing in AI inference chips. Unlike general-purpose GPUs, Taalas produces accelerators hard-wired for specific AI models, which the company claims can reduce costs and produce output thousands of times faster than traditional hardware. Early demonstrations of these circuits show they can generate up to 17,000 tokens per second.

AMD plans to integrate this technology into its product roadmap, specifically targeting its central processors, Instinct GPUs, and Helios rack-scale systems. The acquisition follows a series of strategic moves by AMD to build integrated systems to compete with Nvidia, including the previous purchases of ZT Systems, Silo AI, and MK1. This trend mirrors broader industry shifts, such as Nvidia's $20 billion acquisition of assets from Groq.

Founded in 2023, Taalas has raised $219 million in venture funding. The startup currently offers a chip capable of running a small version of Meta's Llama 3.1 model. CEO Ljubisa Bajic developed the platform to transform AI models into custom silicon, noting that a previously unseen model can be realized in hardware in only two months.
