India's Solar Scheme Provides Zero Bills to 1.9 Million Homes

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy informed Parliament on July 29, 2026, that approximately 18.94 lakh households have received zero electricity bills following the installation of rooftop solar systems under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. Data as of July 24, 2026, shows the scheme has facilitated the installation of 4,007,355 rooftop solar systems, benefiting more than 48 lakh households.

Maharashtra leads the country in zero-bill beneficiaries with 417,707 consumers, followed by Gujarat and Kerala. To achieve a goal of reaching one crore households by fiscal year 2026-27, the government has modified the implementation process. These changes include waiving specific technical feasibility requirements, introducing auto load enhancement up to 10 kW, and offering collateral-free concessional loans to applicants.
