OpenAI and HubSpot Acquire Creator-Led Media Businesses

OpenAI and HubSpot are acquiring creator-led media platforms to secure direct audience relationships and accelerate market entry for their AI and software services.

AI and software firms are shifting from sponsoring content creators to acquiring creator-led businesses to gain direct access to target audiences. OpenAI acquired the creator tech show TBPN in April 2026 for a reported amount in the low hundreds of millions. The company integrated TBPN into its Strategy organization to function as a communications operation and a pipeline for talent, prioritizing editorial instincts and influence over traditional media profits.

HubSpot has adopted a similar approach by acquiring AI media platforms Futurepedia and Mindstream to reach AI practitioners. The company employs a selective build-or-buy strategy, using its existing creator program to test the return on investment and lead quality of a partnership before committing to an acquisition. Unlike OpenAI's focus on influence, HubSpot prioritizes the ability of a creator to generate high average selling prices and monthly recurring revenue for its software services.
