U.S. Strikes Iran as Southeast Asia Seeks Russian Oil

The United States launched air strikes against targets in southern Iran to degrade military capabilities used to attack commercial shipping. The operation follows claims by Iran that it controls the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy chokepoint through which approximately 20% of global oil passes.

Despite the U.S. military presence in the region, commercial shipping companies remain reluctant to transit the strait. This instability has led Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines, to seek alternative energy cooperation with Russia to safeguard their supplies.

This shift in energy reliance and the U.S. intervention in Iran may weaken Washington's influence in Southeast Asia. The situation potentially allows Russia to bypass Western sanctions and creates diplomatic opportunities for China to expand its regional economic influence.
