Venezuela Receives Global Aid After Deadly Twin Earthquakes
The Government of Venezuela coordinates international relief from China and Russia after twin earthquakes killed over 4,300 people and displaced thousands.
Twin earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 struck central Venezuela on June 24, 2026, occurring within one minute of each other. The disaster resulted in at least 4,333 deaths and 16,740 injuries, with the United Nations estimating that 50,000 people remain missing in the rubble. The coastal state of La Guaira was the hardest hit, leading to the displacement of 10,981 people in that region alone.
The Government of Venezuela has managed the evacuation of 18,437 individuals into 94 temporary shelters across La Guaira, Caracas, and Miranda. While Governor Jose Alejandro Teran claimed the state response rescued 6,000 people, some residents reported a lack of heavy machinery and assistance. International teams, including the Syrian White Helmets and the Qatari International Search and Rescue Group, have worked to recover bodies from collapsed buildings.
International aid has arrived in phases. The Government of China provided a 100 million yuan emergency grant, satellite imagery, and relief supplies including tents and water purification trucks. On July 12, the Federal Government of Russia delivered a second aircraft of aid, following a 10-tonne shipment of food and blankets sent the previous day. Acting President Delcy Rodriguez expressed gratitude to China and 27 other nations for their support.
