Nigerian Defence Headquarters X Account Compromised by Hackers
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters is working to restore control of its official X account after unauthorized users posted cryptocurrency content to its 980,000 followers.
The Defence Headquarters of Nigeria confirmed that its official X account, which has over 980,000 followers, was compromised by unauthorized users on August 15, 2026. The breach was detected after the account began posting cryptocurrency-related content unrelated to the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Major General Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, stated that the military is treating the incident as a cybersecurity matter. He confirmed that technical measures have been activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorized access while efforts to fully restore control continue.
The military warned the public, media, and stakeholders to disregard any suspicious or misleading content posted on the platform. To ensure the flow of accurate information regarding the operations of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Defence Headquarters urged users to rely on its verified communication channels via Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The military has not yet disclosed when the compromise occurred or identified the parties responsible.
