Verizon and T-Mobile Settle Misleading Advertising Lawsuits
Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile settled mutual lawsuits over misleading advertisements that promised consumers significant savings for switching cellphone carriers.
Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile settled mutual lawsuits on Friday regarding advertising campaigns that promised consumers significant savings for switching carriers. The settlement, filed in Manhattan federal court, ends a legal battle that began in February when Verizon sued T-Mobile over its Save Over $1,000 campaign and claims of savings up to 20% compared to competitors.
T-Mobile had countersued, alleging that Verizon's own advertisements, which featured historical figures, falsely promised a better deal. The legal conflict followed a preliminary injunction issued five months earlier by U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, which blocked T-Mobile's specific savings campaign.
As part of the resolution, the two telecommunications companies discussed a framework to resolve similar advertising disputes in the future.
