ECB Chief Economist Urges Expansion of Euro Liquidity Lines

Philip Lane advocated for expanding euro liquidity safety nets to foreign countries to strengthen the currency's global role and support the ECB's inflation mandate.

Chief economist Philip Lane advocated for the expansion of euro liquidity safety nets to foreign countries during the annual Bund summit in Shanghai. Lane argued that providing these facilities strengthens the global role of the euro and enhances the ability of the European Central Bank to meet its inflation mandate by extending the reach of its monetary policy.

Lane highlighted the EUREP facility, which enables foreign central banks to obtain euros against collateral, as a tool to boost bond markets within the 21-country bloc. He noted that more than 30 central banks have expressed interest in these expanded liquidity facilities, stating that "liquidity lines bolster confidence in the currency and reduce the associated risks, supporting its wider usage."

This push for increased euro usage comes as global policymakers assess the long-term dominance of the U.S. dollar amid unpredictable economic policies from U.S. President Donald Trump. In tandem with these efforts, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde is reviewing the bank's network of currency swap lines with major institutions, including the United States Federal Reserve and the People's Bank of China.
