New Zealand Defence Chief Resigns Over Inappropriate Relationship

Air Marshal Tony Davies resigned as Chief of Defence Force after admitting to an undisclosed inappropriate relationship while serving in a unit command position.

Air Marshal Tony Davies resigned as the Chief of Defence Force of New Zealand on October 23, 2026, effective immediately. Davies admitted the resignation followed errors of judgment regarding an inappropriate relationship he had while serving in a position of unit command. He acknowledged that he failed to disclose the relationship when given the opportunity and stated that his actions were contrary to the values of the Defence Force.

Defence Minister Paul Goldsmith characterized the situation as an integrity matter and stated that Davies' position was no longer tenable. While acknowledging Davies' 42 years of service, Goldsmith noted that the circumstances of the resignation would be a disappointment to the personnel of the New Zealand Defence Force. Goldsmith announced he would recommend that the Governor-General formally accept the resignation.

The New Zealand Defence Force has referred the matter to the Inspector-General of Defence for a formal investigation into military conduct. To manage the leadership transition, Major General Rose King, the Chief of Army, served as acting Chief of Defence Force until Sunday, after which Rear Admiral Mat Williams, the Vice Chief of Defence Force, assumed the acting role.
