Omar Abdullah Demands Restoration of Jammu and Kashmir Statehood

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah demanded the restoration of statehood and constitutional rights for Jammu and Kashmir during an Independence Day address at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar on August 15, 2026. He argued that federalism must be implemented in practice rather than remaining only in words, criticizing the erosion of state autonomy caused by central agencies and national examination systems such as NEET and JEE.

Abdullah asserted that current conditions in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir vindicate the region's 1947 accession to India. He suggested that if Article 370 had not been revoked in 2019, residents of that region might now be protesting to rejoin Jammu and Kashmir. During his speech, he praised the legacy of National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and the local resistance against tribal invaders in 1947.

To rebuild public trust, Abdullah emphasized the necessity of transparency in recruitment and merit-based governance. He framed the protection and strengthening of democracy as a primary responsibility for the current administration.
