Nodal Exchange to Launch AI Compute Power Futures
Nodal Exchange Holdings plans to launch futures contracts for AI computing power by late 2026 to help companies hedge semiconductor rental and electricity costs.
Nodal Exchange Holdings, LLC plans to launch futures contracts for artificial intelligence computing power before the end of 2026. These contracts will track rental prices for Nvidia Corp. semiconductors, utilizing indexes from data provider Compute Desk for Blackwell and Hopper GPUs.
Nodal intends to differentiate its offering by allowing companies to hedge both compute costs and associated electricity expenses. The exchange may use portfolio margining to offset risks between these two variables. Chief Executive Officer Paul Cusenza noted that the ascent of AI is introducing two types of price risks that companies previously did not encounter.
The move places Nodal in direct competition with other financial exchanges. CME Group plans an October launch using Silicon Data indexes, while Intercontinental Exchange is developing a version based on Ornn data. Architect Financial Technologies is also reportedly pursuing similar products.
While Nodal can self-certify its products as a designated contract market, the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission is currently reviewing compute futures contracts. This regulatory review may impact the listing timelines for several of the competing exchanges.
