TSMC Reports Kumamoto Plant Intact After Magnitude 7.1 Earthquake

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. announced that its semiconductor plant in Kumamoto, Japan, remained structurally intact following a magnitude 7.1 earthquake on July 29, 2026. The earthquake struck at 4:27 p.m. local time, registering a maximum intensity of 7 on Japan's seismic intensity scale.

The affected facility is operated by Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Inc., a TSMC-led joint venture. Company officials stated that personnel were evacuated according to protocol and operations are gradually being restored, although further examinations of the site are ongoing.

While the construction site for a second fab in the region was not damaged, some work has been suspended due to the risk of aftershocks. Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan confirmed that other Taiwanese firms in the area, including Delta Electronics Inc. and Advantech Co., were not harmed by the event.
