Two major airports in Istanbul set all-time daily passenger records on August 9, 2026. Istanbul Airport handled 289,732 passengers, establishing a new daily record for both Türkiye and Europe. This figure slightly surpassed a previous peak of 289,260 passengers recorded just one week earlier.
Simultaneously, Sabiha Gökçen International Airport recorded its busiest day on record, serving 179,789 passengers across 935 flights. This total exceeded the previous high of 174,325 passengers.
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that the achievement reinforces the city's position as a global aviation hub. Faruk Kacır, General Manager of HEAŞ, noted that the record serves as an indicator of the airport's operational capacity and commitment to seamless service.
Istanbul Airport served 84.4 million passengers in 2025 and aims to reach 90 million this year. The facility has a long-term potential capacity of 200 million passengers once all construction phases are complete.
