USDA Launches Data Modernization Plan to Reduce Farmer Reporting

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins introduced the USDA Data Modernization Plan to Put Farmers First on September 1, 2026, at the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa. The initiative seeks to reduce reporting burdens on producers by eliminating duplicative data requests and improving the accuracy of statistics used for risk management, crop estimates, and disaster assistance.

The plan rests on four pillars: modernizing the reporting experience via mobile access, enhancing yield and acreage estimation through satellite imagery and geospatial tools, integrating artificial intelligence, and increasing data privacy transparency. Special Advisor Kip Tom noted that initial efforts at the National Agricultural Statistics Service will prioritize corn and soybeans to break down outdated information silos.

During the event, Rollins also addressed biofuel policies, confirming the administration will maintain record-high renewable volume obligations under the Renewable Fuel Standard. This was achieved by reallocating volumes previously exempted by Environmental Protection Agency small refinery waivers. Rollins further expressed support for year-round E15 availability and urged congressional leaders to finalize the necessary legislation.
