Lisa Nandy Announces Interventionist State for Online Safety
Culture and Technology Secretary Lisa Nandy announced plans for an interventionist state to regulate online spaces and protect children and women from digital harm.
Culture and Technology Secretary Lisa Nandy announced plans for an active interventionist state to police and regulate online spaces during a speech at the Labour Party Conference. Nandy argued that the state has historically shown violent indifference by outsourcing internet policing to the private sector.
As part of this regulatory shift, the government is implementing a comprehensive social media ban for children. Nandy also detailed upcoming legislation designed to prevent children from taking, sharing, or viewing nude images.
Nandy characterized these current measures as a staging post toward more extensive state regulation to ensure user safety, particularly for women and girls. She stated that the government will not look away or stand aside when it comes to safety online.
