Massachusetts Voters Face Record Nine Ballot Questions in November

Massachusetts voters will decide on nine statewide ballot questions during the November 3 election, marking the highest number of such measures since 1994. The Secretary of the Commonwealth’s Office certified a slate consisting of eight petitions and one veto referendum regarding 2024 firearms laws. Due to the volume of questions, election officials expect ballots in most communities to span two to three pages.

Key proposals include the establishment of a single statewide all-party primary and the implementation of Election Day registration. Other measures seek to expand public records laws to include the governor's office and state Legislature, as well as introduce zoning reforms for starter homes. Additional questions address the collective bargaining rights of employees at the Massachusetts Committee for Public Counsel Services, natural resource conservation funding, and state revenue limit calculations.

While most measures are finalized, a specific question regarding the prohibition of retail recreational marijuana sales remains unresolved. The final status of that measure depends on a state panel's decision regarding a signature challenge. The Elections Division determined the official order of the questions based on the length of each summary to optimize available ballot space.
