Mayor Mamdani Threatens Legal Action Over ICE Parking Lot Use
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani threatened legal action against ICE for using city-owned parking lots as staging grounds for federal operations.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani threatened legal action against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for using city-owned parking lots to stage operations. In a letter to the Trump administration, Mamdani characterized the use of these properties as unauthorized and illegal, arguing that the practice creates fear and endangers local residents.
Mamdani also urged more than 1,000 private parking garage owners to prohibit ICE from using their properties. This escalation follows recent criticism from the mayor's administration after an ICE officer shot Oscar Belgal, and occurs as New York City maintains its status as a sanctuary city.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security defended the operations, stating that the presence of ICE in public parking lots is a standard law enforcement practice authorized under federal law.
