Azerbaijan and Georgia Expand Trade and Energy Ties
Azerbaijan Prime Minister Ali Asadov and Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze signed agreements to boost trade and energy security during a two-day working visit.
Ali Asadov, the Prime Minister of Azerbaijan, visited Georgia from October 29 to 30 to strengthen bilateral economic and energy ties. The visit culminated in the 11th meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation in Sighnaghi, which Asadov co-chaired with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
The leaders reported a 42% increase in trade turnover during the first nine months of 2026, with figures approaching $1 billion. Discussions centered on energy security through the Southern Gas Corridor and the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline, alongside plans to develop a green energy corridor to Europe. The two nations also agreed to implement a joint border-crossing point named Silk Road (Aghstafa) – Abreshumis Gza (Gardabani) to enhance the transit potential of the Middle Corridor.
Beyond the commission meeting, Asadov attended the inauguration of social facilities in Tbilisi and held a one-on-one session with Kobakhidze. The visit concluded with the signing of a final protocol and bilateral documents regarding veterinary and plant quarantine matters to facilitate agricultural trade. The cooperation follows a July 2026 incident where Azerbaijan provided energy assistance to Georgia during a system crisis.
