Singapore Approves 900 Megawatts of Renewable Energy Imports from Malaysia

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore has granted conditional approval to two companies to import a combined 900 megawatts of renewable electricity from Johor, Malaysia. Southern Solar Alliance Pte Ltd., a subsidiary of Ditrolic Energy Holdings, received approval for 600 megawatts, while Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd. was approved for 300 megawatts.

Both projects will utilize solar power and battery energy storage systems, with commercial operations expected to begin around 2029. To reach financial close, the companies must still secure financing, conclude power purchase agreements, and obtain all necessary jurisdictional approvals.

These approvals support Singapore's strategy to decarbonize its power sector, which accounts for 40% of the nation's carbon emissions, and its target to import 6 gigawatts of low-carbon energy by 2035. The EMA has now granted conditional approvals or licenses to 13 import projects across Australia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam, totaling 9.25 gigawatts of capacity.
