Azerbaijan Strengthens Strategic Ties With Slovakia and Serbia
Azerbaijan expanded diplomatic and military cooperation with Slovakia and Serbia through high-level meetings focused on infrastructure, energy security, and advanced defense technologies.
Azerbaijan conducted a series of strategic engagements with European partners to bolster economic and security ties. On July 14, 2026, Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, hosted Slovak President Peter Pellegrini in Shusha. The leaders focused on the 2024 Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership, discussing cooperation in energy, transport, industry, and digital technology. A central component of the talks involved Slovakia's role in restoring the Karabakh region, specifically through a Slovak company's Smart Village project in the Bash Garvand village of Agdam. Both presidents emphasized enhancing European energy security and utilizing the Middle Corridor for logistics.
Following the diplomatic talks with Slovakia, Azerbaijan transitioned to defense cooperation with Serbia. On July 16, 2026, the Azerbaijan–Serbia Joint High-Level Working Group on Military Cooperation met in Baku. Led by Major General Farid Aliyev and Major General Slavko Rakić, the delegations discussed expanding military-technical collaboration. The talks focused on the Digital Army, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, air defense, and unmanned systems. The two nations also reviewed plans for joint training and military exercises to strengthen their defense partnership.
