British stock indexes are on track for weekly gains as investors shift capital into defensive sectors to avoid a global rout in AI-linked equities. The FTSE 100 is positioned for its strongest week since early April, while the midcap FTSE 250 rose 0.55% on Friday. These gains were primarily driven by the personal goods sector, which climbed 7.2% for the week, and the healthcare sector, which rose nearly 5%.
Banking stocks, including NatWest Group and Lloyds Banking, declined following reports that Finance Minister John Healey intends to tax lenders in the upcoming budget. Defense stocks, such as BAE Systems and Babcock International, helped mitigate losses on Friday. In the e-commerce sector, THG plc saw a share price surge after raising its annual adjusted core profit forecast.
Regarding monetary policy, Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey stated that signs of second-round inflation remain limited. Despite this, traders are currently pricing in four interest rate hikes over the next year.
